Office Fit-out Guidance

Integrated ICT planning for modern office environments

When You Need It

Consider office fit-out guidance when:

  • Building new infrastructure or major renovation
  • Upgrading existing cabling systems
  • Planning for higher-speed applications (10G, future-proofing)
  • Working in electromagnetically noisy environments
  • Designing for dense device deployments (APs, cameras, IoT)

Design Considerations

Performance & Speed

Consider the bandwidth requirements of your applications. Higher-spec cabling supports future growth and emerging technologies.

Interference & Environment

Assess your environment for sources of electromagnetic interference. Shielded or specialty cabling may be required.

Budget & ROI

Balance upfront cost against longevity and maintenance. Higher-spec cabling often saves replacement costs within 10 years.

Installation & Compliance

Some cabling types require specialist installation practices. Ensure your contractor is certified and experienced.

Standards & Best Practice

Work is carried out to BS EN 50173, ISO/IEC 11801, and where applicable, TIA 942. Testing and validation follows these standards to ensure compliance and long-term performance.

Why standards matter: Standards protect your investment, ensure interoperability, and guarantee your infrastructure meets performance expectations over its lifespan.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Under-specifying for Growth

Choosing cheaper cabling leads to costly replacement within 5–10 years. Higher-spec is modest investment for decade-long performance.

Ignoring Your Environment

Unshielded cabling in noisy areas leads to performance issues. Site assessment is essential.

Poor Installation

Excessive bend radius or improper termination can degrade even premium cabling. Skilled installation matters.

Skipping Certification

Without field testing, you won't know if your cabling meets spec. Testing is proof of quality.

FAQs

Shielded CAT6a is recommended for dense office environments, IoT deployments, high-speed links, or areas with electromagnetic interference. Unshielded CAT6 is suitable for standard office cabling.

CAT6 requires 4x cable diameter (typically 1 inch), while CAT6a shielded requires 8x cable diameter. Proper containment design protects cables during installation and throughout their lifecycle.

Shield grounding must follow your cabling standard (BS EN 50173 or equivalent). Proper bonding at both ends prevents EMI and maintains signal integrity.

Certification confirms that installed cabling meets performance standards through field testing of insertion loss, return loss, and NEXT. You receive test reports as proof.
